Joe Cain |

My brother Joe has collaborated in significant projects in the past, like our BMW e21 m50 engine conversion, all his work. Joe’s enthusiasm on this project spiked when I said in 2001 that it was going build a hot rod BMW. All of a sudden it was non-negotiable -the car WOULD have a carbon hood, carbon trunk and intake manifold. All items that Joe (in his day job) tooled, fixtured, fabricated and finished. This was a giant effort and hundreds of hours more than either of us planned. Lastly, thanks to Joe for talking me out of the 4WD system idea(E30 325ix based?). Scary - as we had all the parts on the garage floor. Joe’s comment; “if you do this it will take two more years and be too heavy”. This decision started the 2 wheel drive Lightweight design theme and sparked the idea of using a transaxle. . . Joe was an enormous, quiet contributor. |

Tom Rakestraw |

Tom Rakestraw, who came into the project in 2003, was first an observer. Tom instantly locked in and understood the OEM design / evolution discipline used in this project. Up until then, the only person I would really listen to (on any design idea), was Joe. Rakestraw starts hanging around. And then helping. Then contributing ideas. Some of them were really, really good. Ideas like the simulated louvers on the carbon hood, the whole center console, the whole rear deck and partial shelf. Unlike some garage buddies, Rakestraw shows up with serious woodworking tools and starts fabricating beautiful custom parts, out in my driveway. The only down side is that some of Rakestraw’s ideas are really expensive. When you know it is right, you have to do it; I relish the idea of reciprocating on his next restoration. I already have some idea$.

Butch Severloh |

Butch Severloh, owner of S and S Engineering, was highly involved in the 3.8CSi. Butch also improved the fabricating quality on each one of the hundreds of custom Twin Turbo parts. An equally enthusiastic hot rodder, Butch allowed me unlimited (very scary) access to his precision sheet metal fabricating shop. Butch taught me an incredible amount about the fine art of fabrication and volunteered numerous hours in helping with the really difficult parts on the car. The merciless abuse I would take if each edge and each bend on every part was not perfect, I would not trade for the world. I am on year 12 in the Severloh training program and have only 8 more to go until I am full apprentice! You know the guy is enthusiastic when he breaks down a production machine to run one piece for a hot rod project. There is no finer enthusiast or teacher. If you notice the perfect and beautiful MIG weld beads on the car – that would be Butch. Thank you. |

Dominic Herrera |

|
Dominic Herrera for his enthusiastic effort with the bodywork, sanding and this web site. Dominic was the designer of www.38CSi.com and his work is sooo “factory”. Dominic worked with Wayne Golden at Golden Autobody and was key in completing the paint job. Dom designed and built this web site, he speaks fluent HTML and is a very quick learner. At half my age, Dom is in some respects twice as smart. If you equated one’s IQ to horsepower, Dominic would be the “Top Fuel” of the cerebral set. Thank you for keeping me in the (www) 21st century. He's currently doing environmental work for the State of California. On the side, he is available if you need web site maintenance or construction. Dominic Herrera can be reached at by e-mail for web site, I.T. consulting or trouble-shooting and surf trips.. |

Ben Strader |
| |
|
Thru an introduction by Butch Severloh, I met Ben Strader, the founder of EFI University. If you ever aspire to really understand engine management theory and fundamentals there is no better source than taking a class from Ben. View: www.EFI101.com. He has a amassed a staggering amount of engine management knowledge and has leveraged it into course materials that work at every level. I was lucky enough that Ben took an interest in the twin turbo at its mid-point. We had just installed the entire drivetrain, trying to start the car and the Bosch system was clearly not going to work. At this point we abandoned the stock ECU and literally cut the mating connector off of the harness. Ben directed us to Autronic as a system that can read all the stock sensors, drive VANOS, provide full control over both fuel and ignition maps and provide full electronic control of the boost. After rewiring and buying all the hardware, Ben provided a “house call’ and within 3 hours had the car running. Once the car was fully assembled we put it on the dyno and on the second session hit 335 HP with 6.7 lbs of boost. These successes would not have been possible without his support. We are not finished yet, next year if we get some lower compression pistons and a new……… |
